Poland's contribution to world science is disproportionate to the country's size and political history: from heliocentrism through the kerosene lamp, vitamins and silicon monocrystals to the first extrasolar planets. Today's primary and secondary education is among the best in Europe, and Polish pupils return from almost every informatics olympiad with a medal. There is one crack, but a clear one: a country with the second-best maths score in the EU has no university in the world's top 200, and its research spending is a third below the EU average.
